Background

Andrew Deacon first had the idea to start up a shared space for a workshop or craft centre in 2019. It would be somewhere that ordinary people could go too, to build projects, repurpose old furniture, or create other arts and crafts.

He himself wanted to have a space to work to help him adjust to his Parkinson’s  Disease.

In September 2020 The Enterprise Hub in Newtown supported by The Wales Cooperative Centre conducted an online Social Enterprise learning course, called the Mid-Wales Hack of Kindness. Andrew and David were in the same group and put together a proposal to create a CIC for a Shared Community Space.

Working with the Wales Cooperative Centre they set up a Community Interest Project.

Community Space Project (cic) vision, mission and goals.

Vision

The Community Space Project, aims to set up a unit (TheShed#1 Newtown) to up-cycle and repurpose items collected by The Skill shop (part of Circular Economy Mid Wales) at Potters re-cycling centre. As well as creating unique items from new and reused timber. These will be sold through local outlets and at town and village shows, as well as online.

We will be teaching the Shed members the skills they need to produce these items, and working with social groups such as, Dal Dy Dir, Pont Hafren, Men’s shed at Lys Glan Hafren. Disability Wales, and Pavo. The shed will be open to all regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or ability.

The community wood recycling social enterprises that we help to set up and develop are committed to making as big a contribution as possible to environmental improvement and social justice.

Quite simply, we are in the business of saving resources and creating work and training for local disadvantaged people.

Future expansion.

Using TheShed#1 as a pilot. csp(cic) will take experience, skills and lessons learnt, to set-up further sheds in other towns across Wales. Some of these would be woodwork related, others metal work, arts and crafts, and performing arts. All being dependent on the success of TheShed#1.

CSP(cic) are also looking into the possibilities of running a waste timber collection and re-cycling scheme, collecting waste wood from builders and building companies across Wales. This would be cheaper for the companies concerned than hiring skips and enhance their eco credentials. Giving a supply of reclaimed timber to the sheds and other potential buyers, generating an income for CSP(cic) to to cover costs and reinvest into the sociable enterprise sheds. And preventing timber going to waste. A scheme like this called (Community Wood Re-cycling) already operates in areas of England. But they only deal with urban areas, so CSP will concentrate on the rural areas of the country with the option of partnering with CWR in urban areas not yet covered by them.

The rural wood recycling scheme offers a cost-effective and efficient collection service for all wood waste – nationwide.

Working with us Local business’s will ensure that their waste is reused in the most environmentally beneficial way and will help us to create jobs for local people, so no matter where they are, what industry they are in or how much wood waste they generate, we can help.
